Date: Feb 19, 2027 (Fri)
Time: To be announced
Venue: HKU Campus
Host: AI & Humanity Lab@HKU and Law & Technology Center@HKU
Description:
This workshop will convene leading legal scholars and philosophers for a discussion of how we ought to treat AI systems in the law. This is a particularly salient topic as a number of jurisdictions race to pass “anti AI-personhood” laws.
Should we treat AI systems as artificial persons, similar to corporations? As non-persons with certain protections, similar to animals and embryos for example? Or as full-blown literal persons with the same protection as other human beings? As we address this question we consider what kind of arguments and what type of evidence would be probative of favoring one approach over another. We also pay particular attention to the underlying nature of AI systems and how it affects (or should affect) their proposed legal status.
