A HCI/UX Framework for Virtuous AI

Speaker: Dr Rachel Robertson, Hong Kong Baptist University

Abstract:

This talk argues that AI ought to support the acquisition and exercise of integrity: the alignment within and between our thoughts, motivations, identities, and interactions with each other and the world. I will argue that an integrity-centred framework is very useful for assessing cognitive, normative, and affective elements in the design and use of AI technologies, revealing how such technologies present many barriers to well-being. In particular, I will highlight how AI generates structural constraints on integrity which cannot be overcome by simply implementing rules and regulations, or working to improve end-users’ virtues and internal states like motivations and beliefs. I will then offer some suggestions for addressing the structural impact of AI in two contexts: tech companies, and educational institutions.
