Abstract:

The Ramsey sentence approach to scientific theories has been a mainstay in philosophy of science, especially in the debates between empiricism, realism, and structural realism. But the the theory of Ramsey sentences is purely deductive, and this does not fit well with the indispensable role of probability and statistics in contemporary science. In my talk I will present a new probabilistic theory of Ramsey sentences that is closely linked to Bayesian statistics and a broadly semantic view of scientific theories. In addition, the new framework contributes insights regarding the structure of empiricism and realism.
